Halo 6-Inch Air Tite IC Recessed Light Housing #H7ICTNB

Halo 6-Inch Air Tite IC Recessed Light Housing #H7ICTNB from Halo
  • IC-rated 6-inch-aperture recessed downlighting fixture
  • For commercial/residential use where housing will be in direct contact with insulation
  • No socket plate means time saved during installation
  • Aluminum housing dissipates heat; galvanized steel plaster frame
  • 1-year warranty; requires 1 120-volt incandescent lamp (not included)

This is the housing to use if you want a larger-aperture (six inches) lighting solution for installation in insulated ceilings. The H7ICTNB also gives you the added convenience of no-socket-plate construction, which saves time (and labor cost) because you don't have to remove the socket and socket plate to install the fixture. In addition, the wide variety of trims available with this model allow you to customize the unit to match your décor, finish, and desired lighting effects (and, if you wish, make the unit air-tight).

Like most of Halo's recessed lighting fixtures, the H7ICTNB is designed for ease of installation and flexibility across a variety of materials and situations. The hanger bars include pre-installed nails (self-tapping screws are also available) in special housings that ensure smooth, straight penetration, whether you're working with laminated composites, engineered I-joists, open-web joist plates, or even frozen lumber. The automatic leveling flanges allow you to hold the housing securely in place with one hand while driving nails with the other. The housing also includes integral T-bar clips for use with suspended ceiling T-grid systems.

Halo also makes it easy to work in confined spaces. To install in joist spans of less than 12 inches, simply collapse the hanger bars then bend and break them along the score lines--no tools needed. The bars can also be removed and repositioned on the opposite side of the frame if you need to mount the unit at 90 degrees to the original configuration. Wiring is a breeze with Halo's patented Slide-N-Side wiring system, which allows wiring outside the junction box.

Trims sold separately. UL/cUL listed for damp location, feed through, and direct contact with insulation and combustible material.--Josh Dettweiler

Halo 5-Inch Air Tite Recessed Light Housing #H5ICAT

Halo 5-Inch Air Tite Recessed Light Housing #H5ICAT from Halo
  • IC-rated 4-inch-aperture housing for recessed downlighting
  • For new construction installation where insulation will be in direct contact with housing

  • Die-stamped 20-gauge aluminum with galvanized steel plaster frame
  • 1-year warranty; for use with 120-volt incandescent lamps (not included)

One problem with recessed light fixtures is that they can undermine all the hard insulating work you've done by allowing warm air to leak into your attic. The H5ICAT from Halo is designed to eliminate this problem: its trademark "Air-Tite" housing prevents airflow between the attic and living spaces. The housing itself is insulated, which means that you can cover it with insulation without risking a fire. And it looks good, too--the five-inch aperture is both elegant and inconspicuous.

The H5ICAT allows for a variety of situations particular to your construction site. It can be positioned at any point within a 24-inch joist span, and score lines are provided to facilitate field-shortening for 12-inch joists. The junction box is approved for through-branch circuit wiring and has seven 1/2-inch knockouts with true pry-out slots. The housing may be adjusted for ceilings of up to one-inch thick.

The housing also features preinstalled nails for easy installation, and it includes an automatic leveling flange that lets you align the housing and hold it in place with one hand while securing to joists. For safety, the unit includes a thermal protector that deactivates the fixture if it overheats. Available with a variety of trim options (sold separately). UL/cUL listed. --Josh Dettweiler
