DELTA 14-651 Professional 1/2 Horsepower Bench Mortising Machine

Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a 1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step up from Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with the professional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head, a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There's also a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piece fence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuck key/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, and Delta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inch chisel and bit sets. DELTA DP300L 12-Inch TwinLaser Crosshair Drill Press

We were taken totally by surprise when we first saw Delta's new DP300L, because it's got the features of the big boys but the footprint and the price tag of your basic benchtop drill press.

It starts out simply enough, with a six-inch distance between chuck center and column, letting you drill the center of a 12-inch board. The quill travel is a decent 2-3/8 inches, plenty for any drilling or sanding job. There's a wide range of spindle speeds to use for whatever material you're drilling, be it wood, metal or plastic, from 620 rpm all the way up to 3,100 rpm, all accessed by slipping the belt onto the appropriate set of pulleys under the top cover.

The table is a reasonable 8-1/2 by 9-7/8 inches, and it tilts easy for angled drilling. But what we like most about the table is the accommodation for a C-clamp along the edge, something most drills in this class have overlooked. In addition to the table, there's an auxiliary table mounted to the column that holds an array of bits and other supplies, quite a nice feature on a drill this size. The table travels up and down the column via a very precise rack-and-pinion system like the floor-stand drills, and the locking mechanism is solid.

Lighting's always been a bit of a problem on drill presses we've used, but this one's got an integrated gooseneck lamp that moves and tilts and shines light exactly where you want it. But that's not the only light on this drill press: It's got two lasers that project a bright red crosshair on the work surface showing exactly where the bit will contact the material. It's powered by a 9-volt battery (not included, so pick one up beforehand) and has a rocker-style power switch on what Delta calls the pod. Calibration is a relatively simple process, and the results are outstanding. Rather than running the bit down to the workpiece for an approximation of the contact point, you just turn on the beams and pinpoint where the bit will cut. We think the lasers will be particularly useful when drilling into cylinders like PVC pipe or dowels and pilot holes in intricate scroll-saw patterns.

It's a nice, sturdy press that really doesn't need to be bolted down to your workbench but can be if you prefer. We're really pleased with the innovations on this press and glad to see Delta maintained quality while adding the bells and whistles. Bravo!--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

DELTA 17-950L 16.5-Inch TwinLaser Crosshair Drill Press

Delta's marketing this drill press as one made finally for woodworkers instead of machinists, and it's welcome change. The changes in the table alone are worth trumpeting: It's 14 by 18 inches, has T-slots for a miter gauge, a removable insert and tilts 0 to 45 degrees forward - yes, forward -- and 0 to 90-degrees both left and right with detents at 0, 45 and 90-degrees. The forward-tilting table is quite a coup for woodworkers, offering so much more control and versatility, and even better, combined with the standard lateral tilt, now tricky compound drilling angles are a cinch. We love the T-slots, too, enabling the use of myriad shop-built jigs and sleds, stop blocks, fences and clamps. You'll just need 5/16-inch T-bolts to hold your jig in the slots. But the best table innovation, and the most eagerly awaited, we think, is the clampable perimeter. No more wrestling to find a spot for a C-clamp. Thank you, Delta!

Of course, most of the buzz around this drill press focuses on the crosshair lasers, admittedly very cool. Delta made these easy to calibrate and simple to use, and it's kind of addictive. Just a push of a button, and the crosshairs show exactly where the bit will contact on the workpiece. We think the lasers will be particularly useful when drilling into cylinders like PVC pipe or dowels and pilot holes in intricate scroll-saw patterns.

The quill travel is an outstanding 3-7/8 inches, plenty for pen turners to drill through half a blank. And the quill can be locked down to facilitate use of abrasive bits, another feature we really liked.

There's a nice speed range, but you have to change speeds the old-fashioned way, by adjusting the belt on the proper set of pulleys. It's an easy task. Other honorable mentions include the integrated work lamp that fully illuminates the table, and there's even a nice depth gauge on the spoked handle.

It's great to see a toolmaker respond to customers' needs like this. Hats off to Delta on this one.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

The new POWERMATIC® PM701 Benchtop Mortiser features an in-line depth stop which allows the user to stop at preset depths without racking the mortiser bit to the base. Its heavy-duty reversible handle is so versatile that it can be changed from one side to the other quickly and easily and requires no tools to do so. The stock hold down features a specially designed double lock system. One locks from the side, the other locks from the top, to completely eliminate any slippage when removing the chisel from the work piece.
