Small shop? Limited budget? That doesn't mean you have to give up on owning a jointer. This Shopmaster model is perfect for either situation but still packs features for precision woodworking. Variable speed offers 6,000 to 11,000 rpm, adjustable at the touch of a dial; infeed and outfeed tables adjust smoothly and easily. Though the 30-inch bed is shorter than stationary models, you aren't losing anything in width, because the JT160's cutting capacity is a full 6-1/8 inches. The fence, shorter and lighter, of course, than stationary models, tilts 0 to 45 degrees outward for beveling and chamfering operations. Positive stops are at 45 and 90 degrees. One sure advantage over its big brothers: the JT160 weighs just 35 pounds. Its cutterhead uses two knives rather than three, and the knives level with an easy-to-adjust jackscrew. This is a sweet jointer to use. It is one of the most accurate jointers on the market, which is a critical attribute for a jointer. An accurate jointer means all of your components will fit together perfectly. Using a cheap jointer means the cumulative error of each component will add up, making the final product not square, with loose joints and even not fit together at all. Accuracy makes all the difference in the world for building furniture. This tool is very powerful and doesn't bog down during use, even with tropical hardwoods. It has an extra long bed and all the control knobs and levers are well placed. When it comes to jointers, there aren't a lot of differences among the leaders in the market. Like other manufacturers, Jet uses heavy-duty cast iron in the fence, jointer base, and infeed/outfeed tables and offers a three-blade drum and built-in 4-inch dust port. Their design, however, features a couple of innovations that changed our "jointers are jointers" mindset. While the infeed tables in other models can only be raised or lowered with a rod or lever system, this machine's design allows you to adjust both of the feed tables by rotating smooth, industrial-style hand wheels. This feature lends itself to easier tapers and gives you more control when you need to take off precise measurements, like 1/64 of an inch, a setting that can frustrate woodworkers lifting the arms up or down on other machines. The fence glides extremely smoothly throughout its range of motion and tilts both ways, but, where other brands offer fixed stops only at 45 and 90 degrees, Jet's jointer adjusts to quickly reproduce multiple cuts at any angle you find necessary. Driven by a 4,850 rpm, 1-horsepower induction motor completely encased in a welded steel stand, this jointer comes prewired for 115-volt outlets and can be converted to run off 230-volt sources. Whether you're shopping for your very first jointer for your home workshop or your third for your professional shop, we think Delta's X5 is an excellent choice.
Its price tag comes in under many of its competitors, but the quality is still top-notch, and Delta didn't skimp on the features, our favorite of which is the fence's ability to tilt both left and right. If you're cutting just a slight bevel, it doesn't really matter which way the fence is angled. But for bigger angles, it's tricky to keep your workpiece against the fence. Delta's solution: Tilt the fence toward the cutterhead and flip your workpiece so it fits snugly into the lesser angle. Beauty!
We weren't sure we'd like a lever as opposed to a good old handwheel for infeed table height adjustments, but it's easy to operate and gave us precise adjustments. Rabbeting, tapering, edge and face jointing are all a pleasure to perform on the X5. Results were smooth and snipe-free, thanks to the three-knife cutterhead that was set perfectly right from the carton. With a 4800 rpm, you're making 14,400 cuts a minute.
The X5's capacities exceeded our expectations with a max width of 6-1/8 inches and a max depth pass of 1/8 inch. The table's length is just shy of four feet, and we felt comfortable with workpieces as long as eight feet. The fence has positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees, and adjustment is quick and easy should you find them out of alignment.
Assembly took about 90 minutes, and that included swabbing off the generous grease Delta applied for shipping. This machine's no lightweight at 225 pounds, so enlist a buddy's help when you're ready to set it up.
As jointers go, this one's pleasantly quiet, plenty powerful and solid as a rock.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
