Petzl Tikka XP Head Lamp

Plenty of climbers, backpackers and campers think of energy-saving LED headlamps as a safer substitute for tent-bound candle lanterns, but Petzl's Tikka XP shines new light on nocturnal potential beyond your tent and campsite. It features three lighting settings including a boost mode that illuminates up to 55 yards or so depending on the light-reflection properties of the surrounding terrain (wet black rocks always seem to steal some from any manufacturer's claim). While boost mode is an energy-saving option (the three AAA batteries can last up to 120 hours), it's a fairly practical feature when you think about how much time you spend looking at the ground directly in front of your feet while hiking or climbing in the pre-dawn and dusk hours. The power-saving economy mode is ideal for tent reading and sorting pack gear. A wide angle lens, tilt lamp and superb water resistance are standard features. The Petzl e+Lite Headlamp serves either as your go-to back-up if your primary headlamp fails to perform, or functions as an ultra-light lighting alternative. About the same size as a sports watch, the Petzl e+Lite Headlamp weighs slightly less than an ounce with the lithium batteries installed. Including the hard plastic carrying case, the unit weighs just 1.62 oz., a small price to pay in the weight department when illumination is all that separates you from the trailhead or a warm sleeping bag. For the size, the Petzl e plus Lite Headlamp is more than adequate in a pinch. The three white LEDs throw a beam of 62 feet in maximum mode, or lights the route 36 feet ahead in economy mode. Built for tucking into a survival kit and then forgetting about it until the time comes that you need it, the e+Lite Headlamp has a shelf life of 10 years. It also features white and red strobe modes for rescue purposes, has an option to illuminate with the red LED alone to preserve night vision, and has a lock mechanism to keep the switch from accidentally turning on inside your backpack. Petzl Zipka Plus 4-LED Headlamp

Lighter and more compact than the featherweight Tikka headlamp, the waterproof Zipka Plus features a retractable strap that can be attached to your head, arm, legs, pack, pole or whatever works to help you find your way or do your work in the dark. It has a waterproof design and a watertight rubber toggle switch that alternates between four light settings: High, Medium, Economy and Intermittent. The four LED lamps consume roughly one-tenth of the power used by a standard flashlight bulb and offer a lifetime of over 100,000 hours (that's over eleven years of literally living in the dark--no pun intended). Available in Desert and Forest Camouflage color schemes, the lightweight and compact Petzl Tactikka XP is designed for backcountry hiking and hunting. Equipped with a powerful single LED bulb, three lighting levels, a boost mode and colored wide angle lenses, the high-performing Tactikka XP is ready for adventure. A 1-Watt LED bulb produces a maximum brightness of 40 Lumens. Three standard settings allow you to regulate the length of the beam from 59 feet to a maximum of 114.8 feet. By adjusting the length of the beam, you can maximize efficiency, increasing burn time from 60 hours to 120 hours. For those moments when you need just a bit more power, a convenient Boost mode casts a 164 foot beam for 20 seconds. An additional setting produces a strobe light for emergency signaling. A hinge on the housing of the Tikka XP enables you to aim the beam where you need it most. You can also adjust the beam from a flood beam for sharp, proximity lighting to a spot beam setting for maximum distance.
